Ajax will not buy Bruno Varela, Portuguese medium A Bola reports. The Portuguese goalkeeper was in Amsterdam on loan and Ajax had the option to buy him for € 6 million but has reportedly decided not to do so.
The 25-year-old was loaned from Portuguese club Benfica for 1.5 seasons. Since he joined Ajax in January of 2019 he’s only played 3 games for the first team. No-one will look back on those games with joy.
In his first game between the sticks for Ajax, he kept a clean sheet, but this was against the amateurs of Spakenburg in the KNVB Cup (7-0). Only a few days later he and Ajax collapsed versus FC Groningen in the Eredivisie and lost 2-1. His final game for the first team was the first leg versus FC Getafe in the Europa League. This match was also hopelessly lost with 2-0. His worst performance of all was versus FC Utrecht u23’s though, with Jong Ajax. With three or four massive blunders Varela was personally responsible for the humiliating 7-2 defeat.
You can probably see now why Ajax didn’t lift the option to buy the goalkeeper, even though he was very much liked in the squad. This wasn’t enough to warrant a € 6 million price tag, however.
Ajax is still looking for a replacement of André Onana, who stated he wanted to leave Ajax to take the next step in his career. All About Ajax drafted a shortlist with goalkeepers we think might replace the star from Cameroon.
