Jong Ajax faced NAC Breda on Friday in the Keuken Kampioen Divisie. Mitchell van der Gaag’s squad was down a goal early on but ended up on top: 1-2.
The match started out with a minute where none of the players of either team touched the ball, as a statement against racism. Just like all other matches in professional football this weekend. After one minute both teams played on.
The first twenty minutes Ajax completely blew NAC out of the water with quick plays and high pressure but it didn’t lead to any good chances. The first chance of NAC immediately results in a goal. Van Hooijdonk (the son of) put El Allouchi free in front of Kjell Scherpen and he did not hesitate; 1-0.
Noa Lang once more
After this unexpected goal NAC started playing freely and more chances followed for the home team. Luka Ilic was close to doubling the lead but just put it wide. This was a wake-up call for Jong Ajax and they started attacking again. Just before half-time Ajax was finally able to do something back. Noa Lang outran the NAC goalie and scored from almost the backline. A perfectly timed goal because the referee immediately whistled for half-time.
In the second half the game remained very exciting without a clear dominant side, but Ajax had the better chances. Traoré got a massive chance to put Ajax in the lead but failed eye in eye with Olij – who played an amazing match. Also Kühn wasn’t clinical enough with his finishing and Ekkelenkamp was just too late to score the rebound of the German youth-international.
It wasn’t all Ajax tonight though, NAC got some chances too in the second half. Shots by Boussaid and Ilic were saved by Kjell Scherpen.
Golden subs
Eventually it was the substitute Brian Brobbey, who came on the pitch for Nicolas Kühn, who scored the 1-2. Another substitute, Kenneth Taylor, crossed the entire midfield after which Castillo gave a perfect cross which was headed behind Olij by the 17-yeard old Brobbey. This was Brobbey’s first goal for Jong Ajax.
NAC almost scored the equaliser in the last minute of extra time but the goalpost saved Scherpen. This win for Ajax means they’ll stay 3rd in the Keuken Kampioen Divisie, 4 points behind de Graafschap. The next game of van der Gaag’s team is on Monday at home versus Helmond Sport.
