Ryan Gravenberch thinks he’s ready to play for the first team of Ajax. The Dutch Midfielder tells in an interview with Dutch football-magazine VI, that Ajax is clear about the plans they have with the 17-year old talent and an extension of his current contract which runs till the summer of 2021 is an important part of those plans.
Gravenberch knows the level of the first team is very high, nevertheless, he would like to be permanently part of the elite-group: ‘Why it’s not possible at this moment? Cause the coach is choosing other players. But Ajax has been very clear to me. If I keep on achieving, the number of minutes I’ll play in Ajax 1 will increase. And once I’m playing well right there, we can start making the next step. Until then I have to play as much as possible in the Keuken Kampioen Divisie and stand out at that level. As long till Ten Hag will think: Ryan is ready for it.’
Ryan Gravenberch knows that with Erik ten Hag no presents are being given. ‘The competition is huge. There are new players and a lot of them are playing on the midfield as well,’ he says, referring to the transfers of Razvan Marin, Edson Álvarez and Lisandro Martínez. ‘It’s quite simple, I have to prove that I’m better than those guys.’
The future looks bright for the born Amsterdammer, but Gravenberch doesn’t want to look too far ahead. Reaching the first team is the main thing on his mind: ‘Im playing for Ajax for such a long time, I’m a child of Ajax, so I’m not worried about the extension of my contract. If I’m not playing as much as I want, I’m the one to blame. I want to play in the first team of Ajax and be decisive during the games.’
