Erik Ten Hag satisfied with current Ajax formation

After some puzzling, it seems like Erik Ten Hag has found the right formation to play with Ajax. With David Neres, Dušan Tadić, Hakim Ziyech, Quincy Promes and Donny van de Beek in the line-up, Ten Hag has chosen for an attacking tactic. He mostly plays that way in the Eredivisie, but on Tuesday he used that tactic against Chelsea.
In the home game, Ajax played with Lisandro Martínez and Edson Álvarez as central midfielders. It was Alvarez who was placed on the bench at Stamford Bridge, which lead to a more attacking style. “In the Johan Cruijff Arena, we had some troubles to play under the pressure of Chelsea. To avoid that again, we wanted a more offensive type of play and that is why I started with five attacking players”, said Ten Hag to Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf.
The Dutch coach saw that his tactical plan was a success. “Especially on the right side of the pitch, we were able to withstand the pressure and dictate the game as we wanted. I think that our performance was quite good and as a reward, we made a few great goals”, stated the Dutch coach, who tailored his line-up to their opponents. “We took a big step forward by playing a great game in this formation and now it’s up to us to develop ourselves further. But it is good to see that the offensive players are willing to work for each other.”
The manager is seeing “music” in his team. “Maybe it’s too early to say that we are further than last season, but I can imagine that the current play style looks more impressive. Our offensive players are constantly moving and it all looks very dynamic”.
