Jan Vertonghen is still open for a return to Ajax, ‘It’s sort of the plan.’ The 32-year-old Belgian international has an expiring contract at Tottenham Hotspur.

De Telegraaf reported on earlier that Vertonghen wouldn’t come back to Ajax because Ajax wasn’t able to afford his wages. On Thursday morning they also added that Vertonghne wouldn’t want to return because he doesn’t want to compete with his good friend Daley Blind for a starting spot. In an Instagram interview with Dries Mertens’ wife Kat Kerkhofs, he stated however that he would like to return to Ajax when asked: ‘A return to Ajax? Who knows. It’s sort of the plan,’ was all Vertonghen wanted to say about it.

He also joked that going to Belgian club would be difficult since; ‘If I go to Club Brugge, Kompany will kill me, but if I go to Anderlecht, my family will kill me, so I don’t know.’

Jan Vertonghen joined the Ajax youth academy aged 16. After a successful loan spell at RKC, he became a mainstay in the defence of Ajax. The Belgium international played a total of 220 games for Ajax, winning both the title and the cup twice. In 2012 he left for €12.5 million to Tottenham Hotspur.
