The rumours were going around for a few days already but now it’s all done and dusted, as confirmed by Ajax. Davy Klaassen is back! The 27-year-old midfielder has signed a 4-year deal at the club. Ajax pays around €11 million to Werder Bremen. This can rise to €14 million dependent on bonuses.
Davy Klaassen: “I am very happy to be back at Ajax, it feels like coming home to me. I’ve spent half my life here and it’s nice to be back here now. I have always felt connected to the club and I am looking forward to wearing the Ajax shirt again”.
Davy Klaassen joined the Ajax youth academy aged 11. He made his debut for the first team on the 27th of November 2011; 42 seconds after his debut he scored his first goal, which is still the fastest a debutant has ever scored for Ajax. The years following Klaassen became the captain and won the Eredivisie three times and the Dutch Super Cup once. In total, he’s played 180 games for Ajax, in which he scored 55 goals and assisted another 38.
In 2017 he left Ajax for an adventure in England with Everton, for €27 million. This transfer was no success and a year later he moved to Werder Bremen in the Bundesliga. In the last two seasons, he’s revived his career and now Ajax has brought him home!
Ajax has sold three midfielders this transfer period (van de Beek, Eiting, and Marin) and is now looking for some experience to strengthen that part of the pitch. Klaassen is thought to be a perfect fit.
