Only one more week until the transfer market closes, but Ajax isn’t done with new signings yet, according to VI. The club still wants to sign FC Utrecht right back Klaiber and Davy Klaassen of Werder Bremen.
The transfer of Sergiño Dest to Barcelona will be completed soon, and as we reported earlier ten Hag wants to sign a new right back when that happens. The target of Ajax is Sain Klaiber, now playing for FC Utrecht. The 26-year-old defender will fight with Noussair Mazroui over the starting spot on the right side of the defence.
Ten Hag already knows Klaiber well, as he was his manager when he was at FC Utrecht from 2015 until 2018. Klaiber as a right back is a modern one, good defensively but is always trying to get forward to start an attack. Just how Ajax likes its defenders.
A little side note: two years ago when Klaiber was asked which of the three top clubs in the Netherlands (Ajax, PSV, and Feyenoord) he would like to join, he said: ‘As someone from Utrecht you can’t really go to Ajax, if the other two would also be interested I’d choose them over Ajax’. Make of that what you will.
Klaassen is a real Ajax-kid. He joined our academy aged 11 and played six seasons in our first team, which he was the captain of. His move to Everton wasn’t successful and now he’s been at Werder Bremen for over two seasons. He’s revived his career and now Ajax is looking to bring the 27-year-old midfielder home.
Ajax has sold three midfielders this transfer period (van de Beek, Eiting, and Marin) and is now looking for some experience to strengthen that part of the pitch. The expectation is that Ajax will meet with Werder Bremen in the next few days.
