Ex-Ajax player and coach Marco van Basten thinks it’s “ridiculous” that Ajax spent so much money on Brazilian winger Antony. According to him, Ajax should spend their money on experienced players.
Marco van Basten made these statements on De Eretribune on FOX Sports. The ex-coach of Ajax said: “Ajax always boasts about its youth academy and then it’s ridiculous that you’re going to get such a young boy for 25 million. The youth academy is Ajax’s gem, but then they pay a huge amount of money for another youth player.”
In his opinion, Ajax should get experienced players who can mentor their own youth players. “Ajax wants to work with their own youth, in that case, you have to invest in players who can mentor the young talents on the field. Players of a certain level and a certain age.”
Ironically, Marco van Basten was Ajax’ coach when Miralem Sulejmani was brought in. The Serbian is still Ajax’ most expensive signing to date and is widely considered a huge flop.
