Sven Botman has been doing really well this season on loan at Heerenveen. So well that Ajax feels like he’s ready to fight for a spot in the first team next season and has extended his contract until 2023.
Sven Botman is a 20-year-old central defender, who has been playing for Ajax since he was 9. Last season he was one of the better players in Jong Ajax. The step to Ajax 1 was thought to be too big and he needed a lot of playing time so Botman was loaned out to Heerenveen for this season.
At Heerenveen, he’s made massive strides and he has now been awarded a new contract. ‘I wanted to extend if Ajax had a plan with me and it turned out that there was one,’ said the happy Botman. ‘I will return this summer, after which I will get a fair chance to prove myself as a full member of the first team during the preparation and throughout the season.’
Interest from the Premier League
The direct reason for this contract extension and upgrade is the interest of other clubs in his services. Last summer Norwich City wanted to sign the defender. In an earlier interview with de Telegraaf he said: ‘The Premier League is a dream. But as a youth player of Ajax, you really only have one dream: to succeed in the ArenA. Because of my temporary departure to Heerenveen, I seemed to get further away from that. But because of my development in the past eight months, I have come closer to that goal.’
