Ajax will formally terminate Huntelaars contract at Ajax, according to Dutch medium Voetbal International. The contract has to be terminated before April 1st otherwise it’ll automatically renew for another year, under the same conditions.
Ajax will enter negotiations with Huntelaar after the termination for a new contract, VI writes. Due to his age, it’s logical Ajax wants a new kind of deal for their striker. The 37-year-old would probably get a smaller role in the squad than before or even a bit of training responsibilities.
It isn’t sure if Huntelaar wants to continue for another year, but we think he will. Even though he’s ‘old’ for a footballer he still looks fit and is as driven as ever. Since he came back to Ajax in the summer of 2017 he played a total of 107 games for Ajax in which he scored 46, which are still very decent stats.
A player of his stature also deserves a grand farewell from football, which would be impossible if he doesn’t sign a new contract. Due to the Coronavirus that would mean he has already played his last professional game, which would be a total shame.
Huntelaar is also 8th on the list of all-time top scorers of Ajax, another season at the club could easily see him take 6th, which would be a massive milestone surpassing legends as Marco van Basten.
