Severity of calf injury Ziyech not yet known

The new year hasn’t started as Hakim Ziyech had hoped. Just shy of the hour mark he had to leave the pitch in the match versus Sparta (2-1) with a calf injury. Ajax manager Erik ten Hag commented that the severity is not yet known.

Ziyech’s injury wasn’t caused by a tackle or foul by a Sparta player. After a seemingly innocent duel, he immediately sat down on the pitch and gestured that he wanted to be subbed off.

It seems like the Hakim already had some troubles with his left calf since he was playing with a compression sock.

Erik ten Hag was asked about the injury after the match: “We’ll see how it develops tomorrow. We can talk about it for another ten minutes, but I can’t say anything. I have to be patient and so do you.”
