Valentijn Driessen, who works for De Telegraaf, has confirmed once again that Arne Slot is on pole position to replace Erik ten Hag if he were to leave Ajax next summer. The board of directors in Amsterdam is impressed with the current manager of AZ and sees in him the most suitable replacement.
Driessen was invited to sit at the table of Veronica Inside on Monday evening, where he shed some light on the possibility of a managerial change. “He is the most important candidate,” Driessen explained, “because he stands for the same style of football as Ajax: 4-3-3.” He also revealed that Slot was close to signing for Ajax once before. “He was very close to a position in the Ajax academy before he signed with AZ, who had promised him a promotion to the first-team within two years.”
“He has made a very good impression on me so far,” Driessen continues. Slot and his men beat Ajax last Sunday at home with a late goal. Both AZ and Ajax have gathered 41 points in 17 matches, but Ajax still sits at the top of the table based on goal differentials.
