Ajax is discussing a return of Ryan Babel according to the normally well informed Eurosport FR. The 33-year-old Dutch international currently plays for Turkish side Galatasary.

According to the French medium, Ajax isn’t the only club looking to sign him. Newcastle United would also have a major interest.

Babel went through the entire youth academy of Ajax before making his debut for the first team in 2004. His good performances earned him a transfer to Liverpool in 2007. He never really shined there and a few years later he moved to Hoffenheim. In 2013 he returned to Ajax and won the Eredivisie under Frank de Boer. Five more clubs followed and in the summer of 2019, he made a move to Galatasaray.

The Turkish side started loaning Henry Onyekuru this winter, who plays on his position. Rumour now has it that Ryan Babel has been told there’s no longer a place for him in the selection – hence the interest of Ajax and Newcastle.

Update 1: (07-01 14:30)

Ryan Babel’s management has confirmed the talks with Ajax. According to Het AD Ajax wants to loan the forward effective immediate. He’s seen as a good player for the depth in case of new injuries for the other forwards.
