In less than two months the winter transfer window will open once again, and while no promises have been made, it’s looking like Erik ten Hag will have no reinforcements for the second half of the season.

Sporting director Marc Overmars is determined not to act on the transfer market come January, as he already broke the news to various agents that the Ajax doors are likely to stay shut until the summer.

However, Overmars admitted he might still be forced to spend this winter, in case a key player picks up a long-lasting injury. He could also be persuaded to pick up the phone if “a golden opportunity” arises. These are the only two instances in which Ajax might indulge in winter transfer deals this season.

Since Ajax remain unbeaten after twelve matches in the Eredivisie, and are still competing to make it through the Champions League group stage, there is no real outcry for new players among the Ajax supporters. With the impressive early performances of Quincy Promes, Edson Álvarez and Lisandro Martínez, Overmars can pride himself with three successful recent transfers.

Meanwhile, scouts are already flying out to find the next addition to the team, looking once again at the Central- and South-American regions. Henk Veldmate, head of scouting, recently visited Brazil, is currently active in Mexico, and has another trip to Argentina scheduled before the end of the year. Three of his colleagues are representing Ajax’s interests at the u17 World Cup in Brazil as we speak.
