Ajax’s second goalkeeper Bruno Varela admits that he could be happier than he is at the moment but he tries to stay positive. The reason for not feeling totally happy is because of the lack of minutes in the first squad. Nonetheless, the goalkeeper stays positive and keeps fighting for his chances.
‘Players are never 100% happy if they don’t play, but I have to try to stay positive and to keep smiling’ the goalie says on the Instagram Story of Ajax. ‘We have to do our job in the best way possible. I keep working and wait for my chance. André Onana is doing a really good job’.
Whenever Varela is on camera, we see him laughing. The Portuguese goalie is fooling around with a lot of Ajax-players but he is spending most of his time with one player in particular: ‘David Neres, because we speak the same language. He’s from Brazil and I’m from Portugal so it’s easy to understand each other. He is a good friend of mine’ says the goalkeeper.
Varela joined Ajax in the winter of 2019 on loan from Benfica. Ajax decided to extend the loan contract for a year, therefore the Portuguese goalie will be at least be in Amsterdam till the summer of 2020. On 21 October he made his official Ajax debut for Jong Ajax in de Keuken Kampioen Divisie but he didn’t play a minute in the first squad yet.
