Human rights organizations Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch want Ajax’s shareholders to question Ajax about their choice for the training camp in Qatar this winter. Ajax will go to Qatar in January to prepare for the second half of the season.
Last week Ajax announced that the club will be in Qatar this winter in preparation for the second half of the season. Ajax will train in one of the stadiums which are built for the World Cup 2022. A lot of people see harm in this, because of the hundreds of people who died during the construction of these stadiums.
The human rights organizations state on NU.nl that the shareholders’ meeting which is going to take place on November 15th is ‘a good and logical place to ask questions’.
Ajax says in a response to the complaints: ‘sports and politics should always be separated. The reason why we accepted this invitation is that the facilities are excellent, just like the possible opponents. Besides that, this trip offers Ajax a good chance to explore the business opportunities for Ajax in this region.’
